PostPosted: Thu Apr 01, 2004 2:06 am    Post subject: twinview with dual dvi asus v9520 Reply with quote

I have a new 20.1" Dell DVI monitor and a 17" crt monitor. I cannot get it to work in twinview on my asus v9520 card. The problem is that the output is completly random. Meaning, sometimes the display goes on one screen then other times it goes to the other screen between startx es. I have never been able to get the virtual desktop mapped properly on either monitor.

Also when i have connectedmonitor "DFP, CRT" it doesn't work right and I think its because its a dual dvi out and I have to use the dvi to crt adaptor. Not sure if it matters though.

I followed the nvidia README and some discussions on the forum.

Here is my xf86config:

try it out another way of posing your monitors
(concerning another configuration I use).
Therefore visit following post, and just look at my
XF86Config posted there, and the configuration
which is also talked about there:

Ok I followed your config file and re-emerged the 2 packages with the xinerama use flag but the second monitor still doesn't work. It goes into power save mode. Also the selections in Display for screen and mutiple monitors are greyed out.

When I start KDE I get the following error:
Code:
(WW) asusV9520_2: More than one matching Device section found: 8Q¬;

Also I cannot switch back to the terminal(ctrl+alt+F1), I just get no input signal from my monitor.

maybe it is partly because your grafic card,
the chipset is nvidia, right ?

the error tells me that your configuration seems to have
similar or matching sections, could you post your sections of the:
- monitors
- screens
- devices

change this:
Code:
    Option "ConnectedMonitor"   "DFP, DFP"

to that:
Code:
    Option "ConnectedMonitor"   "CRT, CRT"

DFP = Default Flat Panel (or similar)
CRT = Cathod Ray Tube (monitor)

I will try that when I get home. I do have dual dvi output on my card. One of the outputs actually goes to a flat panel monitor through dvi the other output goes to a crt monitor through a dvi_to_crt adaptor. So i'm not sure if it will work.

the mode "CRT" always works,
all in all these are possible:
DFP, CRT, TV

I tried "CRT, CRT" then "DFP, CRT" and then "CRT, DFP" and none of them worked. I received the following error:
Code:

Using vt 7
(WW) asusV9520_2: More than one matching Device section found: 8Q¬;
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to read mapping of display devices to CRTCs
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

If i commented out the option the display on my flat panel(primary) would work but it would be real big and the secondary monitor would go into power standby.

I can get KDE to pick up the two monitors now. I followed the example in
Code:
/usr/doc/nvidia-glx-1.0.4496/XF86Config.sample.gz

I can get the primary monitor to work when twin view is enabled, and the secondary is still out of sync. But now if I only try to do a single monitor like before, the secondary display kicks in.

Is it just that I don't have the horizontal and vertical settings right for the second monitor.

They should be Horizontal:30-70kHz(Auto) and vertical:50-120Hz(auto) per the specs. Here is what I have for my config now:
Code:

Section "Device"
    Identifier  "asusV9520 twinview"
    Driver      "nvidia"
    vendorname "Asus/Nvidia"
    boardname "FX 5200"
#Option "RenderAccel" "False"
#Option "NvAgp" "0"
    #VideoRam    32768
    # Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
    Option   "CursorShadow"      "on"
    Option   "CursorShadowAlpha"   "32"
    Option   "CursorShadowXOffset"   "3"
    Option   "CursorShadowYOffset"   "1"
#   Option   "RenderAccel"      "on"

Also why would the secondary monitor go if I just do a singleview layout?

maybe it is because the parts I just commented in the following code,
which I do not have inserted in my XF86Config:
Code:
Section "Screen"
    Identifier  "Screen Single"
    Device      "asusV9520"

##  Virtual 1600 1200

EndSection

Good to know that my help is appreciated. :D

OK, my XF86Config works, so I just post,
what I would comment (in your XF86Config):
Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier  "asusV9520 twinview"
    Driver      "nvidia"
    vendorname "Asus/Nvidia"
    boardname "FX 5200"
    Option "RenderAccel" "1"
    Option "NvAGP" "3"
    VideoRam    32768
    # Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
## just comment this for now ##
#    Option   "CursorShadow"      "on"
#    Option   "CursorShadowAlpha"   "32"
#   Option   "CursorShadowXOffset"   "3"
#    Option   "CursorShadowYOffset"   "1"

### I noticed your twinview + options ## they belong to SCREEN ##

   EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier  "asusV9520"
    Driver      "nvidia"
    Option      "NvAGP"   "3"
## add this above

#    vendorname "Asus/Nvidia"
#    boardname "FX 5200"

#    Option   "CursorShadow"      "on"
#   Option   "CursorShadowAlpha"   "32"
#    Option   "CursorShadowXOffset"   "3"
#    Option   "CursorShadowYOffset"   "1"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier  "Screen Single"
    Device      "asusV9520"
    Monitor     "dell2001fp"
    DefaultDepth 24

   Option "TwinView"      "on"
   Option "SecondMonitorHorizSync"     "30-50"
   Option "SecondMonitorVertRefresh"   "60"
   Option "TwinViewOrientation"      "RightOf"
   Option "MetaModes" "1024x768, 1024x768"

# just leave out now too much modes, hmm ... I thought the resolutions must be the same #

#   Option "MetaModes" "1600x1200, 1024x768 @1024x768;1600x1200,NULL"
   Option "ConnectedMonitor"   "DFP, DFP"

    Subsection "Display"
        Depth       24
# try leaving out too much again ##
        Modes       "1024x768"
#      ViewPort    0 0
#      Virtual 1600 1200
    EndSubsection
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier  "Screen twinview"
    Device      "asusV9520 twinview"
    Monitor     "dell2001fp"
    DefaultDepth 24

    Subsection "Display"
       Depth       24
# leave out too much again (for now)
       Modes       "1024x768"
       EndSubsection
EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"

# The Identifier line must be present
    Identifier  "Dual Screen"   #!!!
    Screen    0 "Screen Single" 0 0
Screen    1 "Screen twinview" RightOf "Screen Single"
    InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer"
    InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard"

#    Option "DontZap" "0"
#    Option "DontZoom" "0"
#    Option "DontVTSwitch" "0"
#    Option "HandleSpecialKeys" "Always"
EndSection

# try leaving out double sections
#Section "ServerLayout"
#    Identifier "twinview"
#    InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard"
#    InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer"
#    Screen "Screen twinview"
#    Option "DontZap" "0"
#    Option "DontZoom" "0"
#    Option "DontVTSwitch" "0"
#    Option "HandleSpecialKeys" "Always"
#
#EndSection

here is my summary:
you have two ServerLayout Sections and some stuff that
I have at another position (e.g. TwinView + options),
maybe that why, because you have set incorrect many options,
he said "too much matching sections".

Please Post your latest Monitor Sections as well,
maybe there are some mistakes, too.
