Desktop system now.
Soon, a server here at work running a small web server.
A little later, servers at home running DNS, firewall, NFS, and web server. |

As for me a desktop, a laptop, a mail-web-logging server, a logging server at work, and soon an internal web server/proxie server. _________________ My Public Key

i dont think there is so much famous places, since its more a community distribution, then a hightech enterprise supercomputer distro. most firms and universities use something that has phone support etc. (Redhat&co). supercomputers normally use something homebrew if theyre on linux. |

I couldn't imagine if the clusters of supercomputer are using Gentoo, then they are going to spend lots of time installing everything manually. _________________ CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo

actually, i'm in a firm and they used to put redhat on their servers, but, since fedora is a community distro as well, i want to convince them to use gentoo, so i need some references. |

I know Oregon State University uses it. I believe that the forums are being hosted on one of their servers too. You should check out the sponsors page (http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/sponsors.xml). I would imagine that they wouldn't sponsor gentoo if they didn't already use it.
There was also a story in the GWN about a university in Newfoundland switching to gentoo. (http://www.gentoo.org/news/en/gwn/20040209-newsletter.xml).
I'd be interested to know other places as well. I've asked this before but most people here seem to just use debian when they need an alternative to Redhat.

Well, it's not famous by any means, but we have 2 labs of PCs running Gentoo here at Clarkson University.
Nothing big, its probably 40 machines total, but they are open to the public. I've dragged a few friends in there to show them linux
I probably wouldn't have Gentoo on my machine if not for the 15-20 people on campus who run it and were very convincing and helpful when I was contemplating it. |

We have most of our servers and workstations using Gentoo at the Dept. of Meteorology at the University of Maryland.
I'm not sure how famous that is, but we're the 7th link on google if you search for "Department of Meteorology" so I guess that's pretty good.
We're going to be building a cluster of opterons soon... running Gentoo, of course.
We also use FreeBSD.

The Mozilla Download system uses Gentoo Servers.
Until recently it tagged the FTP download pages saying it uses Apache / Gentoo to power the server. But recently not been showing this... |

if you do a quick search for openmosix, you will also find a link about an enginering firm that clustered a bunch of machines using gentoo to turn them into a supercomputer at night.
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=41171&highlight=openmosix I think is the right link.
pretty nice project and turned out pretty well _________________ Someone asked me once if I suffered from mental illness. I told him I enjoyed every second of it.

GO CLARKSON! (class of 2001)
Im not famous, but my company runs exclusively on Sun hardware and Gentoo. We're running DNS, FTP, http, jsp, postgres, mail, and probably something else that I'm forgetting this second. |

I'm going after my school (currently I'm in Grade 10 HS) to put Gentoo on some of the more lower-end machines we have that are dying. (They're old Pentium-II 400MHz's with 64MB of RAM. Windows 95 OSR1 ). They're weary about doing it and are still bound by an almost-depleted contract, but the two Sysadmins at my school are still interested once the contract is up with Digital Inc.
I use Gentoo on my Hardened server and my gaming PC. UT2004 runs like a dream. _________________ I was a Gangster for Capitalism, by Major General Smedley Butler.

I have a hosted (UML) Gentoo server with Bytemark hosting. Works like a charm. Perhaps you could contact them for some added encouragement? _________________ moo |

We use Gentoo on both Xeon and SPARC.
We can build about the thinnest, easiest to QA server platform and control specific revisions of components. (Python, libs).
Its also trivial to build a revision controlled portage tree/rsync-based imaging system. We're looking into using catalyst to beef this up further. This makes it really viable in my groups eyes.
Old T1 SPARCs make great edge of network boxes running Gentoo.
I can't say where... _________________ "Do or do not, there is no try..." -- Yoda |
