first timer

Hi, I need some advice on software and stuff to look out for, mostly media stuff, 4 now.
Here is my configuration:

Asus A7N8X DLX
Althon 2500+@3200+
512 MB PC3200
Maxtor 160gig
GForce4 Ti 4200 FX
ATI tv-wonder ve
lite-on dvd-rom
lite-on cdrw

For now, i'm still struggling to get sound working

What exactly are you struggling with? Have you been following the Gentoo ALSA guide?

I've been able to get the sound working, but it only works in root...the file permission in /etc/devfsd.conf is just like it's suppose to be according to the alsa tutorial.
