One very welcome addition to gnome 2.6 that I just noticed. When you emerge something, it INSTANTLY displays it in the menus, so you don't have to restart X to see your new icons anymore :D

It does that in 2.4 if you have FAM running I believe is the trick.

I always just killed the panel and then it would rebuild, saved logging out.

I had very limited succes with famd, it doesn't always update correctly and so on. I think we need a new implementation of dnotify to solve this, and since it's a kernel issue really, I think we have to wait for Robert M. Love's kernel messaging layer, which we "might" be able to use for it, and then tie into d-bus and have true push technology to inform gnome-vfs and gnome-panel of filesystem changes.

umm... i think that the rc5 is really the "final" version... read this...

and, you don't have to work all that hard to un-mask it now...
    open up /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask
find line 76. copy from there till line 163 into /etc/portage/package.unmask
now, try ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge gnome [after doing a pretend first...]
depending on your use flags, I think you'll also have to add this line to your package.unmask file: >=media-plugins/gst-plugins-libpng-0.8

ok, and with that, you should be done!

I added the lines to my /etc/portage/package.unmask and tried a pretend run and I get 2 blocks. I'm not sure how to resolve these.

[blocks B ] x11-themes/gtk-engines-thinice (from pkg x11-themes/gnome-themes-2.6.0)
[blocks B ] gnome-extra/acme (from pkg gnome-base/control-center-2.6.0.3)

Could someone point me in the right direction?

thanks
Bill
