xfree-drm neccessary for 2.6 kernels?

I was reading the Hardware 3D Acceleration Guide, and would like a clarification on the following statement:

it won't even build against your 2.6 kernel. And for those who upgrade from 2.4 to 2.6 you should probably unmerge the package so it doesn't try to update it next time you emerge -u world.
