|
|
Hey guys,
I've just put gentoo on a HP/Compaq NX9010 for work, first time I've installed linux on a laptop, and the first time I've used the 2.6 kernel (gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.3-r1).
I used a stage3 install (using the nice new 2004.0 cds) and I compiled my kernel using genkernel - a quick install is an issue here.
I've run the install through, and when I restart I get the grub screen all nice, and then when it boots through to the console in framebuffer mode, the text is all really fuzzy/shaky (too much to be readable) and appears to be offset on to the left. Although it does look like it's in 1024x768, which is right.
I tried adding a vga= to the kernel line in grub, and I specified modes for 1024x768 & 800x600 in 16bit and 8bit colour, but it didn't help (in fact it didn't seem to change anything).
Anyone got any ideas how to solve this? _________________ --

I would check to see which framebuffer driver youre using. I know nothing about genkernel, i always do make menuconfig, so i couldnt tell you how to check. But thats where i would look _________________ truth

ah good idea, I'll do that. From what I'd read I thought genkernel would compile everything and then detect what is needed like the live cd does, but not having the right driver certainly would make sense. _________________ --

Having more than one framebuffer driver selected usually causes problems. Leave the VESA one compiled-in, and get rid of the rest (it should work). |

Oooooo here we go - yet another ATI related problem!
My advice to you would be - ditch genkernel and use make menuconfig. When you do compile your kernel, have just VESA compiled in as cyrillic says.
Also, what is in your grub.conf file exactly? It could be you are setting that wrong slightly. _________________ AMD64 3200+, 1024MB RAM, Gentoo Linux

I'll do that tonight. I really wanted to use genkernel just to save time and get things up and running quickly, oh well, back to the traditional way of doing things.
I'd better dig out the spec sheet and then get googling to find out what kernel modules I'm gonna need.....
Thanks guys. _________________ --

Yup that did it, I just left VESA in and nothing else and all is well again.
Haven't ditched genkernel yet, but I will do. I just gotta learn about laptop architectures and what kernel options I need to run things. :p _________________ --
