Does anyone have ATI + nForce + WineX working properly?

I've tried using the 3.2.8 ATI drivers and the 3.7.6's, but still no go. :( Also I've tried with cvswinex and official WineX binaries... still it doesn't work. :(

My fglrxinfo shows good, my glxinfo shows good, glxgears runs good, fgl_glxgears runs good... heck I can even play Tux Racer with full graphic acceleration.

Yep...

I have a 9800XT, nforce2 mobo (a7n8x-x) and winex 3.3 working just fine.

I've just been playing Star Trek - Eilite Force.

I don't know what to suggest, I have the agp compiled in to my kernel (2.6.5-rc3-love2) and simply followed the how-to ATI thread and it has worked from the start - oh, I am using 3.7.6 drivers as well.

I see lots of threads on ati drivers, but do not know what I did that was different to the how-to thread. I beleive I followed them step by step and it worked and has done since I got my ati card a short while ago.

If you want to take a look at any of my config files - let me know.

Thanks for the reply, and so sorry about my original message being so short! I had actually intended to include a lot more information but I was on the way out the door so I just hit submit to see if anyone could throw out some initial tips.

Annnyyyway,

What actually happens is everything installs correctly and it launches the first part of the game. But after a few seconds of "trying" to do 3D accel stuff (after you get past the initial game menus) then it just completely locks up my computer. Actually the sound kind of starts looping, but I can still move the mouse. However, I can't send any keyboard input or mouse input (I can't even Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to kill X). I can however ssh in to my machine from another computer... HOWEVER, when I go to kill X or WineX from that ssh it completely freezes everything and I hit the reset button.

I have an Abit NF7-S motherboard, ATI Radeon 9700 (non pro) 128MB.

I've tried this with the following:

kernel-2.6.4-gentoo w/ nvidia agpgart compiled in kernel, ATI drivers 3.7.6
kernel-2.6.4-gentoo w/ nvidia agpgart compiled in kernel, ATI drivers 3.2.8
kernel-2.6.4-gentoo w/ nvidia agpgart as module, ATI drivers 3.7.6
kernel-2.6.4-gentoo w/ nvidia agpgart as module, ATI drivers 3.2.8
kernel-2.6.3-gentoo-r1 w/ nvidia agpgart compiled in kernel, ATI drivers 3.7.6
kernel-2.6.3-gentoo-r1 w/ nvidia agpgart compiled in kernel, ATI drivers 3.2.8
kernel-2.6.3-gentoo-r1 w/ nvidia agpgart as module, ATI drivers 3.7.6
kernel-2.6.3-gentoo-r1 w/ nvidia agpgart as module, ATI drivers 3.2.8

Also once I actually tried to run it without having agpgart compiled in kernel OR as module (so it was using the XFree builtin Mesa "software" driver). Interestingly enough when I went to load the game it didn't freeze up! Also I was getting like 5 frames per second, though. :( And when I went to load from the first screen with 3D acceleration (basically it's a character select screen but the characters are shown as the same 3D models they look like in the game, and they move around etc.) to load into actually playing the game with that character it just crashes the whole X server (says something about a Fatal Error 11 was detected ;) ).

So for some reason I'm thinking that this has something to do with a driver or ATI issue. :(

Also note I select to use External AGP GART when I run fglrxconfig, and I the option "2" for compatibility mode with Wine and etc.

So, did you have to do anything special to your WineX configs or your XF86Config-4 file?

If you wouldn't mind, could you post them or PM them to me? I really appreciate your help. :(

Also I've considered before switching to one of these "love" kernels... ya think maybe that could do the trick?

Also would you care to post your fglrxinfo and your glxinfo for me? Thank you so much! :D

I have:

Giga-Byte 7NNXP MoBo (nForce 2)
Athlon 2000+
Radeon 9600XT

Here's what I use:

kernel-2.4.25-vanilla
kernel-2.6.3-gentoo-r1

Both of these I use with ati-drivers-3.7.6 (as they are the only ones which give me proper graphics in games).

When you ssh into your computer at a lockup, you could try looking at some logs to see if anything can be found there. Try the XFree log, and if there is a wine log, then look into that too. If there's any errors in there, then post them here.

Are you sure you have the ati-drivers setup correctly? What do you get out of glxgears? You should be getting *at least* 2000 fps.

OOOH... just found something interesting here:

dmesg | grep agp
Code:

...repeat n times...
[fglrx:firegl_agp_lock_pages] *ERROR* agp_allocate_memory_phys_list failed

Hmmm.. anyone know what that could mean? [/code]

Ok I tried to redo the ol' fgrlxconfig and rebooted and all'o'dat sass...

After rebooting and starting up X (KDE 3.2.1) my dmesg | grep agp looks like this:
Code:
Linux agpgart interface v0.100 (c) Dave Jones
agpgart: Detected NVIDIA nForce2 chipset
agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 816M
agpgart: AGP aperture is 128M @ 0xd0000000
agpgart: Found an AGP 3.0 compliant device at 0000:00:00.0.
agpgart: Putting AGP V3 device at 0000:00:00.0 into 8x mode
agpgart: Putting AGP V3 device at 0000:02:00.0 into 8x mode

I run glxgears and it is still the same.

BUT, if I run fgl_glxgears then after that is when dmesg | grep agp returns numerous lines of the "[fglrx:firegl_agp_lock_pages] *ERROR* agp_allocate_memory_phys_list failed"

I'm going to install the 3.7.6's again and disable the AGP Lock Pages option and see what that does...

OK, WELL...

It got rid of the error and actually my fgl_glxgears performance went up about 100 fps..

But the game still locked up. :(

edit:

running a dmesg | grep fgl from the ssh client while my PC is "locked up" returns this:
Code:

Ok so because of that I checked MTRR in my kernel and it's compiled in my kernel so that shouldn't be the problem. Restarted back from my Windows install and ran a
dmesg | grep mtrr
Code:
mtrr: v2.0 (20020519)
mtrr: 0xd8000000,0x8000000 overlaps existing 0xd8000000,0x1000000
[fglrx:firegl_addmap] *ERROR* mtrr allocation failed (-22)

The last line is what we were already seeing...

So anyone know anything if this "overlaps existing" is causing this?

Thanks again for any help! :?

I have the same mtrr error reported but it has never casued me a problem - can I ask what game you are trying to play? Is it possible that it is this game causing the trouble and everything else is fine?

Can you post the output of:

Code:
cat /proc/mtrr

please?

I have had many problems with MTRR and ATI drivers, so I *may* be able to help :?

Thanks again for getting back. :)

The game I'm trying to play is Dark Age of Camelot (DAOC) and supposedly it is supported first by WineX 3.3 (something about they haven't updated their site? )

However I've also had trouble with things like trying to install the Windows version of the UT2004 demo and play through WineX (just as a test). I could actually look around for 4-5 seconds but then it froze as well... I was actually able to Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to kill X when I did this one, though...

Oh yes and here's my:

cat /proc/mtrr
Code:
reg00: base=0x00000000 (   0MB), size=1024MB: write-back, count=1
reg01: base=0xd0000000 (3328MB), size= 128MB: write-combining, count=2
reg02: base=0xd8000000 (3456MB), size=  16MB: write-combining, count=1

Ok now i'll probably get flamed about this, but I think you should "fix" your /dev/mtrr by increasing the agp aperture reffered to here.

I'll try and find the site which helped me with this, I can't find it at the moment though...

Well, if this is what you are talking about, then I have already done it.

And unfortunately it didn't change anything!

Can anyone who has this working tell me what kernel options they have enabled, what they have disabled, and what they have as modules?

Thanks again everyone. I'm determined to get this no matter what it takes! 8)

Also to append to the above, BIOS settings for any AGP-related things? 8)

I ran a check on a few things in my XFree86.0.log just to see if I could find anything, and I found a few things that are interesting...

Code:

Also I thought this was kind of interesting. It doesn't find a match for my card, but then it does?! :?

I realize this is probably a lot to swallow but I'm just trying to get something out there for someone who maybe has worked through this before to look at!

One thing of interest to me was the "Option "mtrr" "off"" line. Perhaps should I set this to "on" to see what it does? :P

Also I still think it's totally crazy that I have 3D acceleration in Linux, I can run glxgears just fine, fgl_glxgears just fine, Tuxracer just fine... WineX's little Point2Play launcher app even has a little "System Tests" tab and my graphics acceleration test passes fine there, too! It's just whenever I actually try to USE the 3D acceleration in WineX is when it's crashing down. :(

That doesn't seem a problem to me. If you look closely, it's PCI:2:0:1 that isn't being found. I guess this is the 2nd head of your graphics card. Don't worry about that. It was only a warning anyway, not an error.

Also, is your graphics card fan working ok? Feel your card when it crashes, and if it's reeeeeally hot then it could be a temperature problem.
