|
|
Just started using grip to encode my CD's to ogg.
It does this well...but in XMMS when I try edit the ID3 tags XMMS complains "Error occured when saving tag" or osmething really basic like that.
It doesn't do this to other files I added my own tags with.
How do I changet he tags. |

I rip using Grip, and I play with xmms (and myself, but that's another subject entirely). Which app is this "easytag" for? _________________ Youth and Enthusiasm

I place a CD, Grip rips in and encodes into the Ogg Vorbis compression format (not mp3). Grip then ID tags the ogg file from data from the internet such as name, track number, artist etc...
When I try edit these tags from xmms there's an error trying to modifiy the tag.
I have since found easy tag.
First you can edit tags and it doesn't complain, so my music has the info I want. Based on this tag I can rename all my music files to artist-songname.ogg etc... where grip saved them with underscores. |

So, this is a "plug-in" for Grip, or something else entirely? And it will only work if I'm ripping to Ogg Vorbis? _________________ Youth and Enthusiasm

No, Easyrip is a standalone application. It can edit tag information for mp3's and Ogg Vorbis files. It doesn't matter who/what created those files, it could have been grip or some other ripper/encoder.
The problem I had was XMMS has a inbuilt tag editor (very simple one) and it for some reason couldn't edit ogg tags that were originally created when encoding a cd using grip.
So I emerged easytag, loaded up the encoded files and edited the info to suit.

o View, edit, write ID3 tags of MP3, MP2, FLAC files (supporting ID3v2 and ID3v1.x specifications), Ogg Vorbis files, and APE tag for MusePack and Monkey's Audio files,
o Auto tagging: parse filename and directory to complete automatically the fields (using masks),
o Ability to rename files from the tag (using masks) or by loading a text file,
o Process selected files of the selected directory,
o Ability to browse subdirectories,
o Recursion for tagging, removing, renaming, saving...,
o Can set a field (artist, title,...) to all other files,
o Read file header informations (bitrate, time, ...) and display them,
o Auto completion of the date if a partial is entered,
o Undo and redo last changes,
o Ability to process fields of tag and file name (convert letters into uppercase, downcase, ...),
o Ability to open a directory or a file with an external program,
o CDDB support (from http protocol),
o A tree based browser,
o A list to select files,
o A playlist generator window,
o A file searching window,
o Simple and explicit interface!,
o French, German, Russian, Dutch, Hungarian, Swedish, Italian, Japanese, Ukrainian, Czech, Spanish, Polish and Romanian translation languages,
o Written in C and uses GTK+ 1.2 for the GUI.

I think at least part of the problem is that grip doesn't tag ogg files at all by default. At least 3.0.3 doesn't, not sure about the latest version as I already riped all my cds to flac so I don't need it anymore for now. I put the following in the grip encoder options to get my ogg files tagged automaticaly. Code: | -o %m -a %a -l %d -t %n -N %t -d %y -G %G %w |
Feel free to consult the oggenc man page and the grip documentation if you wish to decipher that. |

Fantastic (where's that little lightbulb-over-the-head smiley guy?), now I understand! This could actually be pretty cool when ripping and burning cds that you may want to play on older audio systems, then, yes?
I wish this place had an archiving feature. On reefs.org if I set "Marked for archiving" it's kept for posterity (or at least much more easily found!).
Thank you! _________________ Youth and Enthusiasm
