I'm trying to install gnome 2.6 I copied all the gnome 2.6 from package.mask into /usr/portage/package.unmask but when I ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge gnome it wants to install gnome 2.4 still do I have to emerge the ebuild directly ala emerge 2.6rc5.ebuild?? |

Well, the problem is that you copied into the wrong file.
It should be /etc/portage/package.unmask not /usr/portage/package.unmask. _________________ Three minutes of thought would suffice to find this out. But then, thought is irksome, and three minutes is a rather long time.

Previously I had installed the gnome-2.6_r5.ebuild with no hassles (after masking out the appropriate entries in package.mask).
After this I had problems with: ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -uv gnome-2.6. Using the absolute path to the ebuild seemed to do the trick:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -uv /usr/portage/gnome-base/gnome/gnome-2.6.ebuild.
Cheers! |

Directly giving portage an ebuild file is a really dirty install...
You shouldn't touch package.mask (it will be overwritten the next sync). Just cut&paste the needed entries to /etc/portage/package.unmask .
Works for me ... |

Those packages are blocking. Uninstall gnome-vfs-extras, gtk-engines-thinice, and acme then run
Code: |
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge gnome
