|
|
Hi people,
I've got gentoo kernel 2.4.22 in my Acer Travelmate 291LCi laptop (Centrino), and wanna use "cpufreq". I've emerged it OK, but it doesn't work.
I've seen in other posts that I should enable an option during "menuconfig", but it doesn't appear anywhere.
I've also seen that I should do some "patch" to the kernel. HOW do I patch it for including "cpufreq" option? (noob level, plz! )
Yeah, I know that kernel 2.6 already includes many of these things. Actually I've tested it successfully, but abandoned (for the moment!) due to USB and other problems, including a strange hi-freq noise from my CPU (???). It was some kind of electrical/interference noise... strange
Thankz in advance! Regards,
Jordi ![Cool 8)](images/smiles/icon_cool.gif) |

You can have a look here. The kernel config is for Kernel 2.6, but I think the ACPI patches are quite the same so it should be very similar for 2.4 series, too. |

Many thanks for the info, Earthwings
I didn't know that URL, I've found that very useful (specially for the "battery" runlevel, hdisk spindown howto, and so)
Anyway, I tried those few (and other) things on my 2.4.22; I also found that "patchin.sh", but something went wrong and my kernel got corrupted... OK, no harm, no foul, I finally passed to 2.6 (gentoo-dev-sources) and I'm happy: I think that SpeedStep finally works, the USB mouse too (hey, "uhci-ecd" substitutes "uhci"!), and that X-files noise from my CPU has dissapeared.
Finally, I've found here http://www.telecable.es/personales/lacofino1/highscreen.html (in spanish!) an interesting guide for the owners of a HighScreen CL50 Centrino laptop (which can be applied to many other laptops!), including ATI Mobility, DVD/CD-RW, battery management, PCMCIA, infrared (and using a mobile phone with IR as modem!), and other cool things.

Jordi, I'm still on 2.4.25-gentoo1, did you find a kernel package that includes the speedstep options? It's not in gentoo and it's not in ck, where else should I look? mm-2.4x has been phased out already so that's no good. ![Confused :?](images/smiles/icon_confused.gif) _________________ undvd - ripping dvds should be as simple as unzip |

Hi Numerodix,
hem... I'm sorry but I'm not an expert on Linux and Gentoo -although I'm proud that, lately, I'm getting an interesting experience with it!
As I said, I preferred to migrate to kernel 2.6, which is not so difficult. Since then (a few weeks) I've been very happy with the SpeedStep implementation (>~3 hours battery), although there are a few things to do yet (hard disk spinoff, etc). I suppose that with 2.4 you can also do nice things (I've heard something about complimentary packages for SpeedStep, as you said), but all my tries on this direction didn't give good results...
By the way, a question: I cannot get "energy save" (turning off the screen after a few minutes) working at all, neither in my laptop (kernel2.6) or my desktop (kernel2.4, AthlonXP). Do you know waht could happen?
Rergards,

Yes I'm on 2.6 now myself.
Well you know I've set my screensaver on the laptop to just blank the screen, goes black after 5 minutes. I'm not sure that's what you mean but I haven't gone any deeper than that. _________________ undvd - ripping dvds should be as simple as unzip |

Blanking the terminal can be done with setterm -blank <number-of-minutesM>, setterm -powersave on and setterm -powerdown <number-of-minutesM>. For XFree86, modify /etc/X11/XF86Config similar to this:
Code: |
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier ...
...
Option "BlankTime" "5" # Blank the screen after 5 minutes (Fake)
Option "StandbyTime" "10" # Turn off screen after 10 minutes (DPMS)
Option "SuspendTime" "20" # Full suspend after 20 minutes
Option "OffTime" "30" # Turn off after half an hour
...
EndSection
|
Probably more important is the backlight dimming. If you have access to the dimming settings via a tool, write a small script that dims the backlight in battery mode and place it in your battery runlevel.
|
You'll need to enable the DPMS option in XF86Config, too. If you use xorg, it's all the same. |
