when i start postfix it says postfix started 'ok' and then when i make changes and want to reload postfix it says postfix not started....any clue why this is so?

Despite the fact that the Postfix init script says 'ok', it sounds like the process is dying on startup, probably because of a configuration error.

You can verify that Postfix it's up using:

nmap localhost

and seeing if port 25 is open.

If not, look in /var/log/maillog for errors.

I ran into a couple small problems after updating postfix. It is looking for the directory /var/lib/held that I did not previously have. I made the new directory and postfix started back up fine. Something worth checking into.

Best way to find out what the problem was is to look at /var/log/maillog though. Just thought I would throw that idea out in case it is of use to someone.
