Anyone shed any light on this one...my machine is running as i want it, and the net is up but I've got these annoying messages regarding e100 in my log, any ideas. I've used hotplug - I think it might be related to that ?
All help appreciated - luvin' gentoo at the moment and learning more and more each day - this is my 2nd build, actually used some USE flags this time around..It's a headless machine - pentium2 and will run apache, ftp and ssh basically. Next project will be getting a wifi usb stick working, gonna be a challenge that - failed on my last build....
I think i can ignore the bind to port 22 error also ?
Here is the problem log extract.

You can check you kernel config again... And the output of dmesg. Did you change the symlink /usr/src/linux to the new kernel folder before you compiled the kernel? |

i dion't remember that step - i think i may have missed it (changing the sym link). oh please don't tell me i've got to do it again ! . I used the dreaded genkernel.

As far as I understand the modules are placed in /usr/src/linux. And because that is pointing to the real location everything is placed on the right spot.
But looking at your 'ls -al' output it is actually pointing to 2.4.25. So nothing wrong there.
But in your dmesg output I see:
Code: | eepro100.c:v1.09j-t 9/29/99 Donald Becker http://www.scyld.com/network/eepro100.html
eepro100.c: $Revision: 1.36 $ 2000/11/17 Modified by Andrey V. Savochkin
|
So in your kernel config the eepro100 is loaded instead of the e100:!:
But don't be afraid! The solution is very easy:
Code: |
#cd /usr/src/linux
#make menufonfig
|
Go to:
Code: |
Network device support --->
Ethernet (10 or 100Mbit) --->
....
<*> EtherExpressPro/100 support (eepro100, original Becker driver)
< > EtherExpressPro/100 support (e100, Alternate Intel driver)
....
|
and change it to:
Code: |
....
< > EtherExpressPro/100 support (eepro100, original Becker driver)
<*> EtherExpressPro/100 support (e100, Alternate Intel driver)
....
|
Exit the menuconfig by choosing exit a view times an say YES to 'save the new config'. Or whatever it asks you. You'll get the point
The next thing you do is:
Code: |
#make dep && make clean bzImage modules modules_install
#mount /boot/
#cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage-2.4.25
|
And there, that should do the trick!

thanks - this has helped me understand a LOT more - i'm making the new kernel with e100 support as i type, hopefully it will work. I've solved my problem with root mounting twice (a genkernel problem i think). From what i read a lot of people have problems with genkernel and it maybe better for me to avoid it next time, I just need to know all the hardware to configure i imagine (seems like dmesg gives me a lot of clues for that).
I will report back if it works - thanks again for such a thorough response. |

ok done it so now i have this - dumb question - sorry. But is that it ? Do I have to change grub.conf to tell it about the new kernel before a reboot ?
Have i done it all - anything else to check ?

Yes, you have to point your grub.conf to the bzImage-2.4.25 insteat of the initrd-2.4.25 and the kernel-2.4.25.
So remove all the kernel-* and initrd-* stuff and replace it with
Code: |
root (hdx,y)
kernel /bzImage-2.4.25 root=/dev/hdX
|
Where x,y is the boot partition (In numbers! So hd1,0 for example) and the X is your root partition where your root tree is (Like in /etc/fstab).
I'm reproducing this from memory so don't blame me if it is not 100% correct...
Succes! |

Of course you can also make a new entry so you have multiple boot options. But how this really works with the modules in the different kernel directories I don't know. You can probably let GRUB look in different locations for the kernel modules (The default is /urs/src/linux). So you can make a multiple boot system with kernels optimised for different tasks! |

It's booting now so (hd0,0) must be right - I've partitioned the default gentoo way - from the install guide.
That look right to you? |

This is how I boot my box at home. So fo me this works fine.
I don't know about the root=/dev/ram0 part...
But maybe a Guru can help us out here? |

Great thanks
I think the root=/dev/ram0 part... is something to do with hotplug - anyway someone on irc told me it's not required.

Sorry looks like I've answered this myself.
I need to compile EXT3 support in my kernel.
Wasn't there (was an M not a *)
Am doing it now.

ok, i think i'm there...could you just sanity check this...this look like a normal-ish setup - ie - is it all as one would expect. I've learnt a lot about building kernels - next time i think genkernel should be left out of the equation. I was surprised though that EXT3 isn't built into the kernel as default though.
Thanks again.

Looks fine to me!
About the Ext3 thing. Some people like to load it as a module. Other people don't use it at all. Like I for example use ReiserFS. That is the nice thing of Linux. It is all about choice! |

what i did forget to do was get rid of hotplug - it came back to haunt me!
I emerge unmerged it!
I take it that was the right thing to do as i'm now using my "own" kernel.
