I installed KDE yesterday after some frustrations with gnome 2.6. Well KDE works great but when I tried to get into gnome today all it did was show the splash screen and play the startup sound. It just sits there doing nothing at the splash screen. I'm not sure what happened. Anyone know any possible fixes? |

Try the stable release of Gnome.
Code: | root@insomnia slip # emerge gnome -p
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] gnome-base/gnome-2.4.2 |

You can try exiting both KDE and Gnome, then making sure no programs from either enironment are running (kill them if they are). _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Even with all KDE and Gnome processes killed before hand it still doesn't start. |

Have you tried putting with a wedgee? All the pros are doing it...
Seriously, though, I think I'd just reemerge gnome 2.6. You might also try getting into Gnome through another user account. If you get in, you might have some kind of problem with the Gnome files in your home directory. _________________ "Families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream."

I can get in using the root account although I'd rather do that. |

I think his point was to try with another user to see if it is a problem with your configuration files, not to always run Gnome as that other user. If it is a problem with your configuration files the easiest way is probably to delete them and start from scratch. |

Ah nuts to that. I'll just get rid of Gnome. I don't feel like getting my settings the way they were before. |

if root can use gnome, then it is likely a permissions issue somewhere. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

I don't think so. I just made a test user and they got in fine. |
