I do this,k the only advantage really is that /tmp will be wiped out when you reboot so you don't end up filling up one of your partitions with temp files. _________________ Search | Read | Answer | Report | Strip |

I've done this for nearly 6 months with no problems whatsoever, its a useful place to put downloaded and temp files as it gets wiped on reboots, so it doesnt get cluttered up, and its all in mem so its much faster than disc access _________________ 95% of all computer errors occur between chair and keyboard (TM)

maybe i would to quicker emerges if i had PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" mounted on tmpfs?
that would mean less disk access during compiling - all temporary files would be kept in RAM...

so long as all the source'll fit in your ram...since that's where the source goes to compile (I think)...if you can fit openoffice source into your ram and still compile you must hae a good amount of ram _________________ while(true) {self.input(sugar);} |

Say i do want to try to mount /var/tmp as tmpfs, what would be a nice choice for size=?? and what amount of physical RAM should i expect on the system. I'm probably not compiling something like openoffice or something like that, but mainly things like Apache, Postfix, courier-imap, amavisd, php, those server stuff...etc... Just wondering...

Probably size=700M or maybe even 500M would do it for most packages, not sure though. Of course if you don't want your tmpfs getting swapped out you probably will need 1.5gig of physical ram at least. |
