genkernel so far had little success imho, time to compile your whole. _________________ I do what I want, and that's what I do.

Although genkernel looks like the easy way out, it seems to cause more trouble than actually compiling your own kernel.
People new to Linux appear to be scared of compiling their own kernel Check out what hardware you have in your machine. Open the thing up! Use lspci, there's loads of ways.
Once you know what hardware you have, you can simply:
Happily select all your hardware and the recommended options from the handbook. When its done:
If you use 2.4 series:
Code: | make deps && make && make modules modules_install |
If you use 2.6 series:
Code: | make && make modules modules_install |
Mount up your boot partition and copy your kernel across to it, reboot, and bingo.
The Gentoo Handbook explains kernel compiles with great simplicity, much more so than I can manage. Check it out _________________ http://www.bash.org/?65749 |

'Command not found' is the error.
Also, when I performed the 'make menuconfig' and tried the compilation I got everything _except_ the initrd. The generation of said file seems to be missing from the docs, when following the internal links, at least, and I am really stuck. _________________ ...Yogi |

The initrd is not needed if you compile your own kernel. Just make sure you include support for your root filesystem and your harddrive controller compiled into the kernel (not modules). |

people completely new to linux SHOULD use genkernel. They always seem to forget to compile things as modules, high memory support, file system support etc...
I use genkernel during install, so that I don't have to recompile for 5 hours when I forget to select an option... After my first succesfull boot, there is plenty of time to compile a faster / better optimized one
PS. genkernel --config all works great to |

Yep... I agree. I am not completely new to Linux but I am pretty darn new to kernel compiling. :-\ I appreciate that timely advice. _________________ ...Yogi |
