I'm using a little program called atitvout to turn on my TV out in my Dell Inspiron 7000. It works beautifully when I'm root, but I'm trying to allow normal users to use it to.

It fails if a user tries to run it with the error:

Code:
open /dev/mem: Permission denied
Could not initialise LRMI.

What group does my user need to be in to access this device?

I've tried adding my user (andy) to several groups using usermod.

Code:
usermod -Gvideo andy

I've tried making my user's group "video", "sys", "bin", "root", all to no avail.
I've tried making my primary group "root", but it still gives me the error message above.

Code:
usermod -groot andy

[edit] I've sorted it, after a few more hours of fiddling. Read below:

In case anyone else ever has this problem:

Basically, I used sudo to fix this: I edited my /etc/sudoers config to allow only the users I specify to run atitvout, with the parameters I allow.

All the user then has to do is type:

Code:
sudo atitvout lt
for example, and it'll act as if they were root. Anything else they do with sudo will fail.

Phew! If you have this problem at all, email me andrew dot sykes @ imperial dot ac dot uk, and I'll send you my sudoers config.
