This is kind of a sequal to the thread I wrote into installing gentoo forum. After solving my original problem a bit further it seems to fit much better in this forum.

I begun to have some bad stability issues with windows. Reinstalling windows caused linux partitions to disappear. After reinstalling Gentoo I did some experiments of installing windows to hd through a vmware :) - which eventually led me to wipe out and repartition whole hda with partition magic 7. Now I can't make partition on this disk (hda3) work as 'root'-fs anymore.

I have two exactly identical harddrives in ide0 and ide1 channels on kt133a/via686b mb.

Installation was
hda1 /boot
hda3 /

I created reiserFS partition to hdc4 and rsynced contents of my hda3 to hdc4. After changing grub.conf and fstab it started to boot. Kernel loads fine from hda1, but kernel itself cannot detect hda. I'll have to write down some exact errormessages later. Anyway, kernel complains something about invalid block device and bad superblock. Hda* drives don't even exists in /dev.

Maybe kernel don't use bios anymore like grub does when it loads kernel or something..? Or maybe this is related to transfer modes? But then again, when I boot from 2004.0 universal disk, it sees hda* drives just fine. Maybe through some generic ide-support which I haven't included in my kernel compilation? There's one Windows installation on this hd too. It seems to read and write OK, but it's terribly unstable - but only if I use other resolutions than VGA I think...oh well, I'm quite confused by now...

Is it possible that this is not a hardware problem as it seems to me? Is there anything I can do to try to wake up this drive?

Next I'll have to get rid of CD drives and check if that helps. If not I'll swap ide channels and check if that does anything. This is just so weird...

OK, here's some log I wrote down...
Code:

hda: 8022MB, CHS=1024/255/63
devfs_mk_dir: Invalid argument.<6> hda: hda1 hda2 hda3 hda4
.
.
.
hda: Bad access: block=47632741, count=1
end request: I/O error, dev hda, sector 47632741
sh-2006: read_super_block: bread failed ( dev gda3, block 16, size 512)

For a starter, size is complitely wrong. Little before messages above it says:
hdc 59777040 sector ( 30606MB ) w/2048Kib Cache, CHS=59303/16/63, UDMA(66)

Any idea anyone?

I would need my dvd-drive (ide0 slave) first time in the morning, and I noticed that it's unmountable. I was in the hurry so I couldn't do more research, but it seems that ide0 ain't working...

Can anybody confirm, that that kt133a/82C686A (asus A7V mobo) works fine with mm-sources v.2.6.5_rc3-r4? HD is 30GB barracude (ST330620A) if that's relevant. That is quite common combination without a doubt, but anyway...
