Genkernel-related entries in Lilo and Grub

I have this question on the genkernel entries in the bootloader files. Why do I have to use something like

[adaptr]

No, if you use genkernel these are the right entries.
It loads the kernel from a ram disk and afterwards transfers the root to the real_root device.
