There are plenty of distros that will hand-hold. Gentoo is not about hand-holding. It is about helping people who really want really want to understand linux develop a really tight, lean machine.

that is one of the main reasons that I switched over to gentoo. I'm a n00b, and I got a gentoo install up and running the first time...go figure.
You just have to be patient and willing to learn...and have lots of coffee _________________ Linux User 355087 |

I loved installing Gentoo from scratch on my own without a install program. I learned lots of stuff that has been very useful later on as well, like how to mount partions, configure network etc etc.
But choice is never wrong. Maybe an optional install program for people coming directly from windows and has never used a command based interface would be good. But then again, there is lots of other linux flavours out there for them, like Mandrake or Suse. |
