|

Since friday I've two 19 inch monitors connected to my matrox G450 system. I toyed around with xinerama but didn't like it (especially the loss of Opengl). I've choosen for a setup in which I start at login metacity (because gnome 2.x.x is my desktop) and several other programs on the second screen like this
/* BEGIN script */
#!/bin/bash
export DISPLAY=:0.1
Esetroot ~/Images/Backgound/GNOME-Fence-MacOSXBlue_1600x1200.jpg
metacity --replace &
xmms &
gaim &
gnomemeeting &
gnome-terminal &
/* END script */
This works and I like it, because I wanted the second screen for things I can monitor all the time (messenger, debugging etc.) and use my main monitor like always. But now I want to know is it possible to extend a gnome-session to the second monitor without xinerama.
Also at login my main monitor displays the gdm inlog and the other the grey raster of X-window, does somebody know where do I best place the command to fill the second monitor with a background instead of the grey raster. |

I can answer the first part my own question now !
>is it possible to extend a gnome-session to the second
>monitor without xinerama
.
I've to wait for gnome 2.2, the gtk+2 will support multi head or start messing with cvs.
Gnome faq:

The second part is still open, hurry
>Also at login my first monitor displays the gdm inlog and
>the second the (ugly) grey raster of X-window (I don't want
>xinerama), does somebody know where do I best place
>the command to fill the second monitor with a background
>instead of the grey raster. |

I use an nVidia GF4 card to drive Gnome 2.2 on two displays.
I use nVidia's TwinView feature, it is xinerama compatible and works with OpenGL (I've been dribbling over the gorgeous rss-glx screensavers). I haven't tried GDM yet but Gnome runs just as it did in single monitor mode, but with extra space _________________ 6700 @ 2.66GHz, 4Gb RAM, 2 x 500Gb, 8800 GTX, PhysX, X-Fi, 24" Widescreen, Tux mascot |
