|
|
Hello-
I have Win2k installed on hdb, and all things Gentoo installed on hda. The Win2k install was done first with hda physically unplugged from the system so Windows couldn't taint it, then the Gentoo install to hda.
I am having a hard time configuring LILO to boot to Win2k. I modified the pre-existing "DOS" boot section in the example lilo.conf to /dev/hdb1, tried it, but when I try to boot Windows, I just get a Loading Windows (LILO prompt, not MS prompt), then nothing.
I would prefer to stick to LILO and not GRUB, no particular reason, I just like LILO better and and more familiar/comfortable with it.
Windows boots fine if I point my BIOS to boot off the primary slave.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance |

I don't think this will work. Windows is confused because it's trying to boot itself from C: on hd1 but it is in fact located on some other letter on hd2.
I think the path of least resistance would be to keep Windows as hd1 and have lilo install itself into hd1's boot sector. AFAIK lilo does not have the same drive remapping capability that grub does. |

Actually, that link above shows how you can do it. (Probably only with grub, don't think lilo will work). |

Oops...you're right. And it does seem that the lilo equivalent is explained in page 2 of that thread. Thanks for the correction. |

There is a learning curve with GRUB, but my experience is that it is much preferred over LILO.
I might add that when I first began to use it I was adding partitions for Win98 and two versions of Linux. I had added some partitions and forgot to rerun grub-install, as I recall.
I was in for a shock though fixing the problem was probably easier to rectify than I would have thought. _________________ ASPushkin

Awesome. The map=0x80 to=0x81 bit from page two worked perfectly.
Thanks much for the assistance!
