Like a lot of people it appears, I am having problems with alsa and xmms. I have searched the forums for help, but none of the configurations work quite right.

My system
Gentoo 1.4
K6-2 400
AWE64
gentoo-sources 2.4.19

OK, here are the things I have tried (suggested by my forum search) and what happens with each

xmms + alsa plugin works, but no sound from other apps untill between songs

xmms + arts plugin allows other apps to play sounds, but crashes when changing songs

xmms + esd plugin Cant open audio error

xmms + oss plugin same as alsa plugin

artsdsp xmms + alsa plugin same as xmms + alsa plugin

artsdsp xmms + arts plugin Cant connect to arts serve error (didnt expect this to work)

artsdsp xmms + esd plugin same as xmms+alsaplugin and xmms+esd plugin

artsdsp xmms + oss plugin same as xmms + alsa plugin

next i tried disabling the kde sound server and trying again

xmms + alsa plugin works, but no sound from other apps untill between songs and crash with ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:791:(snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p failed: Device or resource busy error

xmms + arts plugin cant connect to arts sound server error (didnt expect this one to work)

xmms + esd plugin same as sound server on xmms+alsa and xmms+esd errors

xmms + oss plugin same as sound server on xmms + alsa plugin

artsdsp xmms + alsa plugin same as server on plus random segfaults

artsdsp xmms + esd plugin same as sound serve on xmms + alsa and xmms + esd

artsdsp xmms + arts plugin cant connect to arts server (expected)

artsdsp xmms + oss plugin same as server on xmms + alsa plugin

so, any other ideas?

Thanks!

As an update, I re-emerge xmms and arts-xmms, still no luck :(

similar problems with xmms & alsa, no suggestions but a question...I also have the (arts?) problem described in this post and assumed that this and the xmms-artsplugin are related...wondering if you have the kde problem too?

I don't understand what you're trying to do. It seems like you don't either.

This is how it works. While the song is playing, nobody else can get at the sound card, unless you're using some kind of mixing daemon, like ESD or ARTS. ARTS won't be running unless you're running KDE, ESD won't be running unless you're explicitly running it / running Gnome / running Enlightenment.

The Arts changing songs is a known bug. Use less aggressive C flags, see if it helps. ESD is not going to work unless you're running the ESD Daemon. ALSA provides fallback OSS compatibility, so OSS stuff will just use ALSA.

Check this out, it might help you. :-)

I was fairly certain that was how it worked, after my search of the formus. However, I wanted to be complete in my tests.

I have tried the "artsdsp xmms" thing, but no luck with that.

I also have recompiled xmms and arts-xmms with nothing more than -O0 -pipe, still no luck.

"artsdsp xmms" with prefrences->output plugin = oss works well enough for me (as far as freezing xmms anyway).
Incidently I changed make.conf to use O2 optimization instead of O3 and re-emerged xmms, xmms-arts, arts and alsa-drivers(for good measure) to no avail, the song changes still froze xmms. The bug is documented to exist in a number of distros so I would assume that recompilation will not help (information here)

While on the subject of xmms and kde, and in the interest of killing two birds with one stone, there is this bug with konqueror opening xmms to play internet streams (.pls) under kde (3.0.x possibly others) A fix is described

I use alsa + xmms as well and I had the same problems described here, though I didn't try nearly as many options as the original poster. Maybe this doesn't help, but I made life a lot easier by getting a SBLive 5.1 card because it supports hardware mixing (and because it was in my budget - $30). Saves me the trouble of messing with artsd or esd. Now I can listen to mp3s with xmms, play Maelstrom, and get alerts from everybuddy all at once :) - no skips, freezes, or crashes. I just installed this new card, so there may yet be unforseen problems...
