Hi there,
i know about the versioning scheme of the linux kernel, as odd numbers behind after the dot are development versions and even are stable releases. But the names for the different versions of one kernel version confuse me (BSD-user, we don't have that, sorry :-).
Can someone please post an explaining link or a short summary of the differences?
TIA && rgds,

Vanilla is your basic kernel, unmodified, approved by Torvalds, and distributed at kernel.org. Development-sources is Gentoo speak for the 2.6 series of kernels. Everything else has "patches" applied. Patches are commonly used to add features that are not in the stock kernel or to update drivers included with the kernel. The above link discusses some of the differences between these different patched kernels. _________________ "No question is so difficult to answer as that to which the answer is obvious" -- George Bernard Shaw |

Thank you so far. I can't find "love" on the linked page, but i think i generally understand the different sources.

love-sources is not in portage. Basically this is mm-sources plus some even less tested, even more unstable patches. |
