Hello,

i've a very big problem. I had a full working Gentoo installation on my notebook. After building a new kernel XFree86 and kde won start. Here's my XFree86.0.log:

I used different kernels (vanilla sources, gentoo-sources) compiled apm into the kernel but XFree86 still doesnt work.
Can anyone help me fix this problem?

I would persevere with the kernel config settings for a while. I'm using (or at least trying to use) APM, and I do have a /dev/apm_bios device file. Presumably you have checked, and this device doesn't exist on your system. If it does exist, check the permissions on it. Incidently, my /dev/apm_bios is a symlink to /dev/misc/apm_bios, which has permissions crw-------.

I think you need to go through the APM kernel config settings, and try different combinations. Also, do make sure you are running the kernel you just compiled and think you are running. You can check in /proc/version. Also check that if APM is compiled as a module that the relevant module(s) are all loaded. If you are having difficulty, compile it directly into a kernel and only try switching back to modules once you have got the non-module version to work.

I have the same problem. Can't start X due to /dev/apm_bios missing.

Tried to do :

MAKENOD /dev/apm_bios c 10 134

from something other website I saw. Didn't work.

Removed the ACPI from menuconfig and then recompiled the kernel.
Didn't work.

Searched around and saw a lot of other people having this too.

Is this peculiar to your motherboard and bios ?
In which case, has anybody solved this for a Tyan Thunder
K7 motherboard ?

I have SUSE 8.0 on another hard disk works fine. Maybe I could
copy it's config ?
