dear
first, please excuse this another ICQ thread...
well, i'm using linux for quite a long time and i'm addicted to it. no windows startup screen has infected my eyes for about 3 years now.
however, my expierience says that linux has a big disadvantage: there's no useful icq client available which serves my needs. i've read tons of icq client related threads, but didn't find anything useable.
those clients i tested (and because i disliked them) were:
- sim: used it mostly; the 0.8series was stable but too less features; 0.9series is too buggy
- licq: i hate this design and dislike the lack of functionality
- kopete: no proxy support as far as i know - insufficient
- gaim: dislike the group management; too big indentation of buddies under groups (can i change that?)
- micq: very great, but not very nice handling when using for a longer period of time
- centericq: also cool, but i get errors when using proxy support
- kxicq: do i really have to comment this?
so, do i really have to wait until an insane hacker ports miranda to linux?
or is it because the icq network/protocol is just biggest im-shit ever developed?
i do not have experience with msn/jabber/etc .. but i have about 200 icq contacts, so changing the IM net wouldn't be that smart :)
i'm getting frustrated, does anybody knows an alternative client?
thanks for -every- reply :) _________________ -- Anyone who quotes me in their sig is an idiot. -- Rusty Russell |

agreed, ive mostly been using gaim, because it supports the talking to aim users with an icq account. but you cant change diddly for your info, all you can set is your general info, cant do hobbies, age, location, first/last/nickname and all that. i used to use licq, but it uses an old protocol, and doesnt support talking to aim users.
what i'm looking for is an icq client that lets me talk to aim users, supports file transfers, and lets you set all your user details.
oh, and lets you set the text of your away messages

You haven't talked about gnomeicu
Quote: | * net-im/gnomeicu
Latest version available: 0.99-r1
Latest version installed: 0.99-r1
Size of downloaded files: 1,336 kB
Homepage: http://gnomeicu.sourceforge.net/
Description: Gnome ICQ Client
License: GPL-2 |
I use gaim, but I remeber gnomeicu had far more ICQ related functionnalities than gaim.
[EDIT]you can set your preferences: age, location, interests and so on ...
For the proxy support, It isn't good, but I used tsocks which virtually enables every icq client to pass through a socks proxy.
If you want http proxying try dante and its socksify command. I suppose some devs didn't concentrate on the proxy support because of these two utilities _________________ http://petition.eurolinux.org/ - Petition against ePatents

thanks for gnomeicu link, i'll give it a shot
there are so damn many things a *good* icq client should allow:
- great would be transparancy (did not even work with sim, licq ...)
- tabbed chatting
- global shortcuts
- OSD
- file transfers
- groups
- proxy support
- nice design (i love creative desktops; and this is only reached by customizing *every* application running, especially ICQ which runs all the time)

gnomeicu on my system has 45 uninstalled dependancies. (i dont use gnome). which brings up another requirement of mine is that its not dependant on gnome or kde, i can deal with gtk or something else, but i dont want to install 45 packages to get an im client |
