How on earth do I upgrade my kernel? Do I use the howto in the gentoo installation documentation? What other things do I need to do? How do I emerge the newer kernel? When I do an emerge gentoo-dev-sources it just gives me the already installed kernel. I haven't found anything in these forums or on gentoo.org. Is there anything I need to be aware of?
I have 2.6.3-r1 and can't get Alsa to work worth a darn, so I am looking to using 2.6.4 or higher to see if that can fix my problem (seeing others with the same problem it seemed to help).

That is the latest *stable* kernel in the portage tree for gentoo-dev-sources. Generally it is bad practice to "jump the gun" with packages, but if you like, you can simply:
Code:
emerge /usr/portage/sys-kernel/gentoo-dev-sources/gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.4.ebuild
or any other ebuild in that folder to emerge a specific kernel you want.

Try OSS, instead of ALSA.
