I emerged gcc to the most current version(3.3.3) and now when I boot gnome, I get a blank desktop.
I have to go to actions->run and type bash to get a terminal.
when I try to start anjuta, mozilla, basically any gui app, I get an error libstdc++.so.5 is missing.
Searching for the file I find 11 copies of it but they are all 0 bytes long.

How can I get this file back?

lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           20 Feb 28 05:30 /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.2.7.2 -> libstdc++.so.2.7.2.8
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root         221K Feb 28 05:30 /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.2.7.2.8
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           18 Feb 28 05:30 /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.2.8 -> libstdc++.so.2.8.0
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root         250K Feb 28 05:30 /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.2.8.0
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           18 Feb 28 05:30 /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.2.9 -> libstdc++.so.2.9.0
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root         3.7K Feb 28 05:30 /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.2.9.0
thinkpad sbajic #

probably you need to remerge "sys-libs/lib-compat" to get the system again working?!?

or maybe you need to do the following as root:
Code:
ldconfig
env-update
source /etc/profile
gcc-config i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.3.3

another thing you could do is (as root):
Code:
rm -f /root/.revdep-rebuild.*
revdep-rebuild

cheers

problem is emerge doesn't work anymore.
It needs indicates that python isn't working. I am assuming python needs this file.
or maybe pythons files are set to 0 bytes in a completly unrelated issue.
