Can anyone give me any pointers on the easiest method.
I currently have 120GB HDD with XP on it. Fast AMD machine. I have partition magic and also the KNOPPIX cd. I intend to use 40GB for Gentoo home installation (1-3 users).
Can someone please suggest what I should do.
Am I ok to use partition magic to shrink my main partition to 80GB, then install gentoo on the rest (swap and main partitions separate)?
I started to read the manual but it doesn't help me. Currently trawling the messages.
Thanks. |

you need to make a 32MB boot partition, a swap partition (I would say to make it double the size of your ram, or between half a gig and a gig and a half) and the rest will be your root partition. I'm not sure what all options you have with Partition Magic, the install guide tells, gives, you options of what file systems to use. I have mine boot=ext2 swap=linux swap, and root=reiserfs, you might want to read up and decide what file system you want your root partition to be. Some poeple like different stuff.
HDA1 = XP
HDA2 = BOOT
HDA3 = SWAP
HDA4 = ROOT
or
HDA1 = XP
HDA2 = Linux Extended
HDA5 = BOOT
HDA6 = SWAP
HDA7 = ROOT
all depends on what you want to do
