I am a very new Linux user, anyways,
Upon Gnome loading I get the following text in a box:

Could not look up internet address for Machine.
This will prevent GNOME from operating correctly.
It may be possible to correct the problem by adding
Machine to the file /etc/hosts.

Then 2 buttons below that message say "Log in Anyway" and "Try Again"

Machine is the name of my computer as you can tell, also I have disabled eth0 at boot. I can't remember what I used to disable it at boot, but upon boot up eth0 was taking forever to fail when it was not connected. Anyone have this problem? How did you solve it?

Thanks for your time.

P.S. please inform me if there is something else I need to post that may aid with this issue[/img]

Your /etc/hosts has to be like...
Code:
127.0.0.1       localhost       Machine

This should do it.

i also am having that problem, but only when i log in as non root. the hosts file is set up properly, but the user account doesn't seem to have access to read it, hence the error. user is in the following groups: users, wheel, audio

what permissions should the hosts file have? mine has 600. i'm gonna try making it 644.

edit: yep, that worked.
