OK, so i've been struggling with this sound thing forever, it USED TO WORK.
it still works in windows...so I know the hardware works

When i ran this, gaim happened to make a noise at the right time and i had sound for the first time in weeks (the volume blew me away)

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it?
I'll post any relevant files/settings if someone will tell me what to post

Code:

/etc/init.d/alsasound restart
 * Unloading ALSA...
 * Storing ALSA Mixer Levels
 * Unloading modules                                                      [ ok ]
 * Loading ALSA drivers...
 * Using ALSA OSS emulation
 * Loading: snd_emu10k1
 * Loading: snd-seq-oss
FATAL: Module snd_seq_oss not found.
 * Loading: snd-emu10k1-synth
 * Loading: snd-seq-midi
 * Running card-dependent scripts
 * Restoring Mixer Levels                                                 [ ok ]

[/code]

I should also mention that i'm using the digital output of the card (Sound Blaster Live Value)

There is an on-board sound card that is disabled in the BIOS (I never could get it to work)

I've had zilch problems with my Live! Mind you, I don't use OSS emulation - I compiled my driver into the kernel (2.6.5, gentoo-dev-sources), emerged the alsautils package, ran amixer to unmute the outputs and bingo! Are you using 2.6.x or 2.4.x, cos when I switched to gaming sources and ran it with alsa-drivers it was a bit shaky.

Check out the ALSA Configuration guide, if you haven't already. I highly advise you use a 2.6.x kernel, simply cos you can build the soundcard drivers into the kernel and it all works nicely.

i'm using gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.5

I had it working at one time on 2.6.1

How do I NOT use oss emulation?

How do you configure the alsa stuff if you compile it in the kernel?
alsasound is still necessary i presume, what files does it look at to change settings?

dmesg reveals this:

Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.4rc2 (Tue Mar 30 08:19:30 2004 UTC).
ALSA device list:
No soundcards found

but i add add the module later
at the same time my nvidia module gets loaded

i'm guessing that you haven't emerge alsa-oss, hence it can't find the module. if you don't want oss emulation, just don't emerge alsa-oss =) you'll get that warning, but you can probably cut it out of your init scripts if you want. just out of curiosity, why do you want to not have oss emulation?

alsa is included in the 2.6.5 package, so just compile it, no need to reemerge it.

ran into a similar problem upgrading to 2.6.5 from gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.3 of course my sound card isn't neerly as good as that, it' s a laptop, but fixed it: the problem was that there was a external amplifier that was muted! so just try this:

run alsamixer and check in the end, there is a amplifier that might be muted, unmute it and see ( you can have a song playing in xmms and check the settings and you'll see quickly if sound returns!

bye

good luck

well, i'm assuming I still had to emerge alsa-lib and alsa-utils

I don't know if i need alsa-oss, i have it emerged already.
I just want sound!!!!

I thought maybe that warning that the module failed to load my be related to my silent computer

ok, I updated everything to 1.0.4 (alsa-oss was 1.0.3 previously)

now my error is:
Code:
 /etc/init.d/alsasound restart
 * Unloading ALSA...
 * Storing ALSA Mixer Levels
 * Unloading modules                                                      [ ok ]

keep the ideas coming

OK, i got it to work....but not the digital output...is this a bug with the emu10k1 and 1.0.4 and kernel 2.6.5

This is the first time i've tried the analog output

I'm having to use headphones for the analog output, so I really want to get digital output so I can use my speakers again.

Hello I have a sound blaster Live in a Nforce 3 moderboard with onboard sound, I want to get the sound Blaster working since the Nvidia drivers does not support hardware mixing. I tried compiling the sound as a modules and enabled. These are the files

In continuation, I have digital sound in XMMS, but only when using the alsa plugin. I still have no normal sounds (gaim, aplay, etc...)

Any ideas?

do you have no sounds in gaim/whatever WHILE using xmms? if that's the case, it's a result of xmms having control of the sound device. becuase xmms has control of it, no other application can use it. i believe your card has hardware mixing though, not sure how it works though...

if that's not the case, i'm goign to assume that they don't play any sounds even when xmms is running. let me konw

(ps. if i missed that info in the original post, sorry. i've been sick/ have a big test tonight, so my head is a little overloaded..)

I have sounds in analog (headphones) for gaim AND xmms (only when I use OSS in xmms) simultaneously and alone.

My speakers (digital) only get sound from the xmms (alsa-plugin). It doesn't matter if xmms is running or not, I get no sounds from gaim, aplay.

if i use alsamixer, pcm doesn't affect the sound output (digital) (alsa-plugin for xmms)

xmms doesn't output analog sound when alsa-plugin is used

I hope that makes sense
