Hello,
I'd like to setup a server system based on AMD64. The main task is streaming tv ( using vdr ) and to share the video and audio database to the house internal net.
For the system I'd like to take two 40 or 80gb drives with raid1 and for the rest I thought about using raid5 with about 1 TB.
Can you recommend any hardware I should order for such a setup ?
Is this all possible with onboard or software raid or is it advisable to buy an SATA-Raid Controller ?
Which motherboards will fit my needs ( they should also be WOL compatible and support the AMD Cool'n'quiet feauture ).
Thanks for any hints in advance !
Helmut

Dual 40GB system drives is already excessive, so you should be good for years...

As for the SATA system - you want a 3Ware Escalade SATA controller, they have RAID0,1,5 in hardware (indispensable in this case) and support for up to 8 drives in the more expensive cards.
It will still be cheaper than SCSI ;-)

I would also recommend that you get a raid cage if you plan on going that route. It make swapping SATA drives much easier. I currently have a 640Gb RAID5 array running off of an LSI MegaRAID SATA150-6 card with the drives stored in a Supermicro CSE-M35T1 RAID cage. I am only using 4 of the 5 slots in the cage right now, but I will be adding a fifth drive soon. The cage is expensive, but it allows you to hot-swap the drives without worrying about damaging your other hardware, or even opening up your case. 8)
