Only about three or four lines of the XF86Config file really apply to specific ATI support. Have you tried setting X up first with a generic VGA device, just to get your mouse and monitor support correct? After you do that, you can change the Driver to fglrx, change the VideoRam, and you should be set. Read some of the other posts for more details.

That's a pretty big switch!

I'm not sure which options you were trying. Most of the drivers with radeon in the title are meant for older cards. I haven't tried XOrg, so I hope you have some luck, but I'd imagine similar problems exist for supporting all the different video cards.

Can you say what the exact error says? For example, since I am already in X, running X -configure gives me the following error:

Code:
Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
        and start again.

Other errors might be "no screens found", usually a module problem, or "no mouse/pointer" which means that you might not have the proper mouse support compiled in.

USE flags are only required at compile time. They enable certain options during the install process.

What files are unresolved? It might be that something did not install correctly!

You can also try xf86config instead of X -configure.
