I got Gentoo installed (WOOT YEA) but i can't get xfree to load. it gets to package 7 of 8 then aborts. It tries to download cabextract-0.6.tar.gz from the internet but i do not have an internet connection on the cpu that gentoo is on. i assume this is important for xfree to load correctly but do i need xfree? can i get by and get kde loaded up without it?
any help is appreciated. _________________ "In Nomeni Patri Et Fili Spiritus Sancti." |

Can you get cabextract-0.6.tar.gz from the internet onto another machine? If so stick it on CD/Floppy/Zip and copy it ointo the gentoo machine. Stick it in /usr/portage/distfiles and it should find it when emerging XFree. |

Yep, that copy command is fine. You'll need to be root, but as you are emerging stuff you should be anyway.
I assume you are ok with mounting the CD drive first.
mount /dev/XXXX /mnt/cdrom
Where XXXX is the cdrom device. Probably cdrom if the symlink is set up ok. |

Code: | mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
cp /mnt/cdrom/cabextract-0.6.tar.gz /usr/portage/distfiles/ |

You can download a new snapshot from one one of the mirrors and untar it into your /usr/portage. But as it will not include any distfiles of packages it will only make your situation worse since it will be looking for newer files than what you have. I'm guessing you did a GRP install. |

There are various threads here on how to make runing gentoo with a slow or no net connection just a little less painful. On sugestion fo starters. You can use "emerge -pf package" to get a list of all the files to download, including dependencies, instead of just going file by file. |
