This is not Xfree since the it works whit kernel 2.6.3-gentoo-r2 and kernel 2.6.4 (vanilla source). This problem is also here > https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=157024 | Whit the execption that it is whit kernel 2.6.5_rc1. I have no idea why this is. The nvidia-kernel driver compiles correct but i still can't start Xfree.

I have nVidia on 2 separate machines both running kernel 2.6.5-gentoo and it works fine. Are you getting any other errors when you boot?

Did you run "openglupdate nvidia" ? Did you re-emerge nvidia-glx and nvidia-kernel?

Code:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0):  *** Aborting ***

Your nvidia module can not be loaded. Make that
Code:
modprobe nvidia
works. reemerge nvidia-kernel or post error message from modprobe.

i can try to load the file into autoload module file for the kernel 2.6. However this works ok whit kernel 2.6.3-gentoo-r2. I did try to re-emerge the nvidia kernel driver, both the current version and newer. No change there. I'm going to test it more now.

edit:
Code:
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(II) UnloadModule: "vgahw"

I think the module is loaded (at least is it trying to load the module), why it dosen't work is the strange thing in all this.

Did not went well?
modporbe nvidia _must_ work. All other issues are later configuration of the automation...

Code:
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(II) UnloadModule: "vgahw"

Thats Xfree86 and its nvidia_drv GLX component. Has nothing to do with the kernel module. The nvidia GLX driver complains about the not loaded kernel module.

when you configured your kernel, did you add in Processor Type and Features > Use Register Arguments ?
i found that feature boned the nvidia drivers for me.

I did in the beginning but in my latest test i did remove that out and i did re-compile the driver. It did not work. I did notice that /dev didn't load in the boot progress but it is marked in the kernel to load. I find that strange. I use genkernel 3.0.2 to make my kernel.

I'm going to check the other commands in next test ;)

Now it becomes exciting... lsmod, uname -r, ls -la /usr/src/linux ...

Interestingly the only change that I made was to drop the nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx modules from version 1.0.5336-r1 (unstable) to 1.0.4496-r3 (stable). Prior to that everything was great. When I realized that I had broken X I did an unmerge nvidia-kernel ... and then re-emerged 5336, with no luck.

The next step is going to be a kernel rebuild with mrproper and then put all the modules back together, unless you have other suggestions...?

When the module is loaded... well... Only thing can breake after that is IIRC missing device files in /dev (regardeless if devfs or not) or mismatching nvidia-kernel/nvidia-glx versions.
Somehow... Have to sleep now, dreams will tell me a possible solution, though :)

This is the same nvidia-kernel version and i use whit kernel 2.6.3-gentoo-r2 and i have the correct nvidia-glx software. I know that this driver woks whit kernel 2.6.4 vanilla source, i was unable to compile 2.6.4-gentoo becose of some error that doesn't matter now.

The nvidia driver name has changed from nvidia.o to nvidia.ko. I had to manually remove the nvidia.o from /lib/modules/kernel/video. Unmerge the nvidia 4496 kernel and glx drivers. Remerge the 5336 kernel and glx. modules update and modprobe nvidia. After that X started just fine.

I was receiving a API mismatch error when trying to start X. Maybe this info will be of some help.

Yup that did it....

Thanks OldTango. It makes perfect sense now but I don't think I ever would have found it.

I just upgraded from kernel 2.6.3 to 2.6.5 (gentoo-dev-sources) and X stopped working.
I also noticed that nvidia.o and nvidia.ko were both in "/lib/modules/kernel-version/video". Running "qpkg -l nvidia-kernel" gave this:

Code:

etc # qpkg -l nvidia-kernel
media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.5336-r1 *
CONTENTS:
/etc
/etc/modules.d
/etc/modules.d/nvidia
/lib
/lib/modules
/lib/modules/2.6.3-gentoo-r1
/lib/modules/2.6.3-gentoo-r1/video
/lib/modules/2.6.3-gentoo-r1/video/nvidia.ko
/usr
/usr/share
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/nvidia-kernel-1.0.5336-r1
/usr/share/doc/nvidia-kernel-1.0.5336-r1/README.gz
/sbin
/sbin/NVmakedevices.sh

media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.5336-r2 *
CONTENTS:
/etc
/etc/modules.d
/etc/modules.d/nvidia
/lib
/lib/modules
/lib/modules/2.6.5-gentoo
/lib/modules/2.6.5-gentoo/video
/lib/modules/2.6.5-gentoo/video/nvidia.ko
/usr
/usr/share
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/nvidia-kernel-1.0.5336-r2
/usr/share/doc/nvidia-kernel-1.0.5336-r2/README.gz
/sbin
/sbin/NVmakedevices.sh

So we see that the new module is ".ko". I didn't have to re-emerge anything. This is what I did to get X working again:

1. rm nvidia.o
2. modules-update
3. kdm (I use KDE ;))

Ah damned, so modprobe loaded always the not deleted old module 8O
But tailing the syslog while modrobing would have told that! It logs the nvidia module Version...[/code]

Using the nvidia1.0.5336-r2 driver and mm-sources-2.6.5-mm2 I'm getting
Code:
(**) NVIDIA(0): Depth 24, (--) framebuffer bpp 32

Fatal server error:

If I switch to Driver "nv" in xorg.conf X starts as a breez. A can use the same nvidia-driver with mm-sources-2.6.4-rc2-mm1.

This is how my screens-section looks like:
Code:

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen 1"
        Device     "Videocard0"
        Monitor    "monitor"
        DefaultDepth     24
  SubSection "Display"

        #"1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864"
  EndSubSection
EndSection

Should I file a bug ?

For the first time ever I got the 2.6 kernel (2.6.5) to work. Now I can leave the 2.4 behind.

Code:
bash-2.05b# modprobe nvidia

Inserting the module does not work for 2.6.5 does not work for me. It does for 2.6.4.

I think this person has the same problem but I couldn't understand the answer:
