Yep you´ve heard right the "game of our youth" is now open source..

It´s completly rewritten in C and it´s almost identically with the original..

Here´s the forum: http://www.tt-forums.net/viewforum.php?f=29

and here´s the sourceforge site:
http://sf.net/projects/openttd/

You can compile it by yourself but it´s a bit tricky because of the missing documentation..

Anyone else tried it ?

You need the original Transport Tycoon data (ie a CD) to play it.

Look into the docs directory and read the file for MAC OS X Readme.. It worked here too you need to run the strgen app first to get a strings.h file or something. Then you can compile it..

And about the legal thing: I think it´s legal because i found it on the official forum. It´s even hosted on sourceforge and I never came across a illegal file on sourceforge.

1) the "official" forum? As in tt-forums.net? If not, where?

2) sf.net can not possibly monitor everything that gets uploaded. They host thousands of projects dealing with millions of files. I bet if somebody were to report it, the files would be instantly removed. I bet if Chris Sawyer knew they were there, he'd demand they be removed.

It would be nice if we could convince him to make a linux version of the next version of Transport Tycoon: Locomotion... this is sweet!

I can't get the music to play :( Doesn't feel the same without the cheesy jazz! Sound effects work fine though.

I get this error everytime it tries to play a track:

Code:
mcop warning: user defined signal handler found for SIG_PIPE, overriding

Searching for that error message returns loads of results which either I don't understand or seem irrelevant.

I'm using ttd -m extmidi to start it. I've installed timidity & it's patches to overcome all the errors about that not being there and it's set up. I can play normal .mid & the .gm files from ttd using timidity from a command line, so I'm pretty sure I've got that all set up correctly.

Anyone got any ideas?

I would say it's legal. Or at least you can download it for free from Home of the Underdogs and they're pretty hard on copyrights nowadays

As I understand it, this isn't just an open source clone of the game engine like the Ultima engines or ScummVm. This is a port of the original game code which is now open source. The game data is also "open source" and all the right (legal) permissions exist for distributing this file, like BASS for the ScummVm engine (Although many of the other titles ScummVm can play remain proprietary and distributing "cracked" data for them is illegal)

Strange, I really haven't seen any release but you guys seem to be right, looks like it is all freely available and OpenTTD is looking good.

there's no need to use timidity :)
Code:
su
cd /usr/bin
/* mv timidity timidity_orig */
ln -s pmidi timidity
--
pmidi -l
export ALSA_OUTPUT_PORTS=65:0 /*enter proper value */
--
cd gamedir
./ttd -m extmidi

have fun 8)

edit:
Code:
emerge awesfx
asfxload /usr/share/sfbank/8mbgmsfx.sf2
may be needed ;)
this soundfont comes on cd with soundblaster.

I just installed the ebuild, but when trying to run ttd I get
Code:
nickg@vitara nickg $ /opt/openttd/ttd
Error: No available language packs
ttd: ttd.c:61: error: Assertion `0' failed.
Aborted (core dumped)

bah. :(

Also what am I supposed to do with openttd-0.3.1-overlay.tar.bz2?

Go to /opt/openttd/lang and type
Code:

cp *.lng ../

You need to have at least one lng file into the root direcotry of openttd.. It should work then..

didn't even need to do that, although doing that helped me solve the problem, so thanks. :D

I was calling ttd from my home directory, and it appears I need to be in the openttd directory to get it to run. I was just trying it on my work box, I'll try it on my machine at home later - away from the glaring eyes of my boss - and see if the same thing happens.
