I have no idea why, but I consistantly lose GAIM / xchat / GFTP connections. I can run a bittorrent stream all day it seems, but GAIM (both aim and msn) connections kick me off every hour or so, xchat seems to lose connection with the irc server every couple hours, and GFTP simply messes up any chance it gets.
GFTP is by far the worst of the 3, in that it doesn't even transfer files correctly. A lot (not all) of files I download with GFTP are corrupt. If i loadup ncftp, everything is fine when I download.
I dont have any of these problems when in windows, so i am assuming it is not a network connection problem, but it is either the configuration of the network card (which seems unlikely, since console apps seem to work fine) or something with xfree and gtk apps.
Anyone have any advice on how i can troubleshoot this problem?
Do the three share any common network library that I should try recompiling?
Any help is appreciated. |

Is your connection via DSL? This may be too obvious, but if you are running DSL, could your modem be disconnecting because it thinks it's idle? While torrent is a streaming protocol, the modem sees active data communications, so it stays connected. Maybe Gaim and XChat as not constantly sending or receiving data in a continuous stream, so the modem may be missing the activity?
Anyway, I may be 500 miles outside of the ballpark, I'm just offering what I used to run into before I got cable modem service.

Thanks for the advice, but no that isn't the problem. First, I have a cable modem. Second, I dont see this problem with mirc / gaim (in windows).
Also.. the GFTP problem is not part related to idling. It starts messing up downloads and dying right away. |
