Definitely portage. As an ex-slackware user, I wanted something similar in the lean & mean department, but with a better package management system. I've got it running on both my desktop and my laptop, and even managed to convince a friend to try it as his first distro _________________ Linux User #223670 |

I was going to go Slackware, and the friend that moved me from Redhat, showed me the portage system... and just how fast it was. I went home from his house and started the install immediately. _________________ hooligan

I started using it because it was the only distribution that would work on my laptop(a newish iBook).
Then, I fell in love with it because of how uncomplicated/logical everything was. Yay Portage! I actually want to try writing ebuilds. Also, I like having applications that have been compiled specifically for my computer - it's faster that way and the poor little 500 MHz processor needs all the help it can get. Oh, and it's been a wonderful introduction to Linux - it makes things seem doable without adding irritating amounts of attempts to be "green-friendly". I'd rather not have unnecessary abstraction barriers.
Oh, and I like the community. Real humans, yay.
I suppose it's also satisfying to be able to show my iBook running Gentoo to the friend who suggested that I start out using Linux with Mandrake on a PC. Especially since he's scared to install Gentoo. |

I came here for the sweet sweet penquin porn. Lately every penquin porn site has switched over to a pay type system. I was suprised to find a website dedicated to not only penquin porn but an entire linux distribution dedicated to penquin pornification. |

Gentoo is unique, possibly, in that after an install you have the feeling that you actually know your brand-new setup.
Also, the install CD is wonderfully un-bloated.
Otherwise, I think it would be:
portage
friendly peer comunity / good forums.
recent packages
speed
nice logo

The primary reason why I chose to move to Gentoo is this:
I don't need to download 3 - 7 cd's to install something that can run KDE.
Secondary reasons in no particular order:
- I can keep my system up to the moment with a few simple commands.
- The Gentoo community is "above and beyond" any other linux support community I have seen.
- I'm not an advanced user, so it forces me to brain things out if something goes wrong.
- My mind is whiriling with about a million other reasons so I am just going to quit before I fall over.
Thank you so much to the community again! |

I came to gentoo from Debian because...
1. No Dependency Hell (Redhat)
2. Portage
3. What can I say? When it comes to my computers, I want to know whats going on
4. Speed
5. Simplicity and No bloat
6. The great Community |
