The details I want:
IP: 192.168.0.79
NETMASK: 255.255.255.0
BROADC: 192.168.0.255
GATEWAY: 192.168.0.1
NAMESERV: 194.74.65.86
DOMAIN: homenetwork
now when I login it says:
Setting DNS domainname to homenetwork [OK]
Bringing eth0 up (192.168.0.79) [OK]
Setting default gateway (192.168.0.1) [OK]
etc... all OK
but the bloody internet doesn't work and at login I'm tux.unknown_domain !
I'm running Gentoo 2004.1 with 2.6.7-r7 kernel, the internet worked during the installation, so I'm baffled by the fact it doesn't work now. |

Is your network card wireless, or wired?
If it's wireless, you need to set a whole other bunch of settings, via iwconfig or something similar.
If not.... well, can you ping your gateway, but get no further? If that's the case, there's something wrong with your gateway.
If you can't ping your gateway, and you NIC is wired, I'm lost.
Could you paste here the output of:please? _________________ Wikipedia - The Free Encyclopædia |

NIC is a wired 10/100. There's nothing wrong with the drivers etc, the kernel detects it all fine.
# ifconfig eth0
Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:8D:3E:04:23
inet addr:192.168.0.79 Bcast 192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:36 errrors:0 dropped:0 overrruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:2160 (2.1 Kb)
Interrupt:10 Base address:0xcc00
Can't ping gateway (192.168.0.1)
Can't ping anything. There's nothing wrong with the network, when I was emerging the kernel, system and portage etc everything was fine. Once I actually finished the install I couldn't use the 'net any more. $ doesn't seem to have the ifconfig either, only #.
I've also - to make sure - plugged a Windows comp into the same ethernet cable and I could ping everything. It's definatly a configuration problem with my Gentoo box. |
