I've just been using Gentoo since last Xmas. In some point i emerged ccache as I thought it could speed up re-compilation of packages. You can read about it here:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=2&chap=3#doc_chap2
Well, the funny thing is by default ccache sets a limit of diskspace used of 2Gb!!
Today I was curious and did a
Code: | du -sh /root/.ccache |
and... yes, it was already using 2 gigas
In the doc I linked above, is explained how to set the limit you want editing a variable in the file
Just a warning for unconscious users like me, because as I said, I was wasting 2Gb of my 40Gb HD and it wasn't funny _________________ La PDA de tungsteno |

Hi,
That is a good tip, however when you are experimenting with options in the kernel, and need to keep rebooting it speeds up kernel compile time by a lot. However I don't recompile stuff much, except for upgrades, so maybe I should stop using it? Anyway also you can clean out /usr/portage/distfiles/ |

The 2.6 kernel build system doesn't rebuild every object file for the kernel every time you run make bzImage anymore, so this isn't really an issue anymore if kernel compile times are important. With 1 or 2 changes it usually takes about 30 seconds to compile a kernel on my PC. |

I won't call that waste, you are caching. _________________ Proud to be a 22 year old Infidel, GNOME lover and member of LIK. |

Here's a newbish question:
If the ccache FEATURES tag is set in make.globals, but ccache isn't merged, does that mean the system is still using ccache, just "under the covers"? Or is an explicit emerge of ccache required for the FEATURE tag to have meaning? _________________ a^2 + b^2 = c^2
