sound staticy

when playing UT and basically when listening to any music... the sound is really staticy. not so bad until there are loud explosions. then things get really bad.

using alsa with the via8233 driver (onboard via kt333 sound chipset ac97).

i tried using the ac97 drivers and they never worked... this is the only driver i could get going

anyone know what i can do?

You might wan't to turn down the volume on your sound card. Both DAC
and main output, try to put them down to somewhere around 80-90%.
That might fix your problem. What you're experiencing is clipping on your
sound card output.
