ok, i tried that nice xf86config script in /usr/X11/bin. i get an error that says there are screens that are improperly configured and that there are no screens. further, i get a message saying that 16 bit or 24 bit color is not allowed with my drivers. i tried modprobe nvidia and it told me that FATAL: nvidia already in kernel.

my RAID also gets errors on startup. i used genkernel to compile. in my lilo.conf (grub did not work) i used append doataraid. it searches for hptraid finds it, then fails to load the moduels.

it's likely that i'll have to install over gentoo if i cannot get it working today. i need my computer for school.

The nvidia module likes to use its own closed source drivers, not the open source ones which get built into the kernel. The module will usually work anyway, but it's likely that something in genkernel is causing a conflict.

Compile your own kernel (vanilla-sources preferred) and build it without support for DRM, opengl, local APIC, or power management. Then re-emerge nvidia-kernel and opengl-update nvidia. Finally, follow the instructions in /usr/share/doc/nvidia-glx-1.0.5336-r2/README.gz in order to set up your XF86Config.

It is very likely that this will also fix the problem with your RAID drivers.
