I etc-updated and overwrote my config files (not sure which option I chose but it must've overwrote all the files) and now my computer is having a sorts of startup problems. A newbie mistake.
Is there any way to recover the original files? |

kokaku,
No, you can't get the files back. The best you can do is salvage the install.
If you can boot, use nano to undo the damage. Things like /etc/fstab, /etc/group /etc/hosts /etc/hostname get hit.
If you can't even boot, start with the liveCD, mount your partitions, just like in the install and do the chroot steps.
Now you can fix things with nano. _________________ Regards,

No, there isn't a way to recover the original files. At least, back when I made the same mistake there wasn't a way.
Bite the bullet, and reconfigure everything! What fun!
If you're running this on a computer with XFree, I would take a look at cfg-update. It uses a XFree diff program and also does things like backups of your old config files (which has saved me more than once).
I wish I had better news for you |
