When I boot up I get "/bin/ln: Input/Output error".
Sometimes, I have to restart the computer 10-15x before it goes away.

When I am able to boot in, when I try to use the "ln" command I get a pause, then an error message.
For example:

root@dragon src # ln -s linux-2.6.5-gentoo-r1 linux
bash: /bin/ln: Input/output error

I am kinda frustrated because without "ln" I can't do much.

We need some more information, like
Is it only with ln or also with other commands like ls /cp / rm

Relevant info from /var/log/syslog or /var/log/messages

Do you need to reset your pc, or can you use /sbin/reboot

I saw the same error a few weeks ago. The problem was that I did
not implement the correct IDE-driver for the pci ide-bus in the kernel.
For several hours the default driver worked, but after that I received
the same error. Additionally, I saw in /var/log/syslog lots of
ext3-fs errors. The problem was that the filesystem was
mounted read-only.

After recompiling the kernel-(module) solved the problem. I'm not
sure but have a look at:
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_GENERIC=y

I had this error on a 2.4.19-acX kernel once upon a time.
The machine was 300km away so I did everything to avoid rebooting with a broken ln. I copied a statically linked onto it, recompiled there installed new deb package, no help. After it rebooted after a power failure a couple of days later (without problem fixed), the problem went away. ln linked as if nothing ever there where something with it.

After that I realized, it had something to do with the kernel. I never thought of that before. My be this experience will guide to a solution, may be install another Kernel for testing purposes or so. Btw, which kernel runs with which uptime (mine was >300 days).
