i did that on my mom's laptop. i ssh into it once a week and mantain it, other than that, she's fine.
i mean, gentoo is only "complicated" if you want to manipulate configs; if theres kde on it, the user doesnt even notice he's running an "expert linux" (except everything is spiffy fast and clean). _________________ If you loved me, you'd all kill yourselves today.

So this is a bit of a tangent...
I'm learning Linux because I need something more reliable and far less expensive than Microsoft for my clients.
What I'm looking for is a system where I set up the box once the way it is supposed to be, and it just works. NO user intervention EVER. They want a new app? I'll come take care of it. But otherwise, it just goes and goes and goes.
I need the same thing for my mom who is 2500 miles away and has trouble with email. I want to set it up once, MAIL the computer to her and have it go forever.
If the PC is built and the user has no root access, what can go wrong?
Is Lindows really better once the PC is setup initially? _________________ Who controls the past, controls the future. Who controls the present, controls the past. |

gentoo is perfect for that.
just have an ssh-daemon run on the machine, whenever something needs to be done, you log in remotely and just do it. its pure bewty =) _________________ If you loved me, you'd all kill yourselves today.

Yeah with an SSH Daemon set to run at boot you can provide tech support and updates etc. remotely. Heck I just installed gentoo on my friend's comp across town (well...watched him install it and guided him through screen -x), it worked beautifully SSHing in. |
