|
|
Hello, i want to install Gentoo on my G3 ibook.
So i booted live CD. The boot menu said i can choose between G3, G4 and so on. G4 boots fine. But if i start with G3, i get an error.
On the CD there is no file '/boot/G3'.
I have tried several mirrors but nowhere there is a file G3.
Can i take the G4 kernel? Where is the difference? |

I ran into the same thing on a recent G3 iBook installation and ended up using the G4 kernel. There wasn't any other reasonable choice, but fortunately it seemed to work. I did have to manually load the 'sungem' module and bring up eth0 with dhcpcd to get the network going.
The hardest part of the whole thing is that the Gentoo PPC installation docs were written for 2.4.x kernels. A lot of stuff has changed, so that some info is missing and some is just plain wrong for 2.6.x (configuration for input devices, for example).
My first Mac turned out to be more challenging than I expected, but almost everything is okay now. It's a good thing Google doesn't charge per search _________________ Ask Questions the Smart Way - by ESR |

Sorry if it's been discussed previously, but why G3 kernel was "removed" from the LiveCD? _________________ CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo

I dont know. It looks like a mistake, G3 is still an option in the menu. Only the file is missing. |

I hope they are going to revise the LiveCD soon. _________________ CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo

Lazy master mirror admins.
Two days after 2004.0 was released, somebody reported that the G3 boot option didn't boot as expected. People thought I had just forgotten to put he G3 kernel on the disc, or they even thought we were discontinuing it. But it was just a stupid typo. The kernel on the livecd called G4 is pre-G3,G3 and G4 compatible. The G3 boot option should have just booted that kernel, but because of a typo (a 3 instead of a 4 in the yaboot.conf on the cd), it tried booting a G3 kernel (which didn't exist). The typo was fixed real quick (took only a minute). I repeatedly emailed the gentoo infrastructure lead (klieber) and the gentoo releng team about it, but the cd was never updated. In fact the version with the typo is still being distributed.
Latest iso's can always be found on http://www.metadistribution.org/gentoo/. Somebody should spank the master mirror admin for this. |
