Is there a good guild on the steps to rebuilding the Kernel, and any "catchs" that I should be careful about?
I am having problems with my Alsa drivers for an I810 sound card, and I beleive I need to go back and redo that section in the Kernel. From what I read it is recommend to make it a module instead of imbedded in the Kernel.
Kernel 2.6.5-Gentoo
I've also notice one odd thing, the Spashscreen for Grub is not the blue one that I had in 2.6.4, it is a character based version it seems? _________________ Gentoo 2.6.5 / P4P800VM 2.8Ghz 1GB/120GB SATA |

I'm not sure what you're looking for. The process of rebuilding the kernel has become even easier with 2.6.x: You reconfigure (i.e., "make menuconfig"), then "make && make modules_install", and finally copy arch/i386/boot/bzImage and System.map to /boot. This is all described in detail in the Gentoo installation handbook.
If you're looking for a guide on kernel configuration, though, I think you're out of luck. I have yet to meet someone who fully grasps the complicated inter-dependencies of the available kernel options. The best advice I can give is: Don't change anything without fully understanding the consequences. |
