Hi,
Subject says it all; is it possible to swap front and rear channels when using emu10k with alsa? Live!'s and Audigy!'s rear channels uses better DAC's than front channel, check details from here.

| Swithcing cables ain't gonna help here. I'm using headphones. Rear channel has lower noise and better THD and acs than front channels. |

LOL, that was merely a joke, but here is some real help.
check out www.alsa-project.org . They have a lot of documentation. Take a look at this document. It has a lot of useful tips.
Basically what you are going to have to do it create some type of config file that maps creates a virtual front and rear speaker and then maps the cards front speakers to your virtual rear, and the cards rear to your virtual front.
Make sense. In that docuement take a look at the bindings , you might find some tips and there. Also look at the alias section. Basically read this whole document, it will get you started. It talk about the asoundrc file, I found I like all my asound settings in /etc/asound.conf , system wide 
I hope this gets you started, If I run across anything else I will let you know.

I have read some more on Alsa's site you you defiantly need to edit your asound file (either asoundrc or asounc.conf). I read this on the description of the file | Code: | | hese allow you to do tricky things like combine your cards into one or access multiple i/o's on your mulitchannel card |
I just don'e knot the syntax for what you are trying to do, look at the first link under the bndings, you might be able to figure that out there. And if you need to email the ALSA or ask on their forums/mailing list, you might get some good help over there.
Be sure to keep us updated on your progress.

I haven't much tested this yet, but it seems to do difference:
cat /usr/share/alsa/pcm/front.conf >> /etc/asound.conf
cat /usr/share/alsa/pcm/rear.conf >> /etc/asound.conf
find lines
pcm.!rear {
and
pcm.!front {
from /etc/asound.conf and swap them between eachothers. 
now
aplay -D front test.wav goes to rear channel, and I think that it'll do with true multichannel material too. Problem still is, that this new front is not default channel, or at least master and other sliders except 'wav sur' won't affect into it in alsamixer. |
