i am trying to install Gentoo from behind a http proxy/firewall server at college. The server is a Micro$oft IIS server and requires authorisation (I am not sure but I think it uses kerberos)
is there anyway to get Gentoo to recognise this during installation so I can get the system up and running??

Yes -- you can define an http username and password in your .wgetrc file. (emerge uses wget by default to download source packages) Try a 'man wget' for more information or just read the wget home page
Note that this won't work for 'emerge rsync' as that requires rsync support, not http support. (I believe rsync has similar features, though -- check 'man rsync' for more information)
