SIMPLE Postfix Configuration Problems

I'm trying to get postfix running for a very simple mail system in my local network. I tried following the directions in the desktop setup guide, to limited success.

My machine has hostname "fastbirdy" and dnsdomainname "birdfarm"

I'm doing my best to impart this info to postfix but we're not communcating very well. After starting postfix, I try "mutt -x root" a simple test message to myself, and it doesn't arrive. I turned on the verbose switch for smtpd in /etc/postfix/master.cf to capture the log messages, and here's what I get -

As you can see, the message is from "root@fastbirdy.birdfarm" throughout most of the process, then once it gets to smtp it somehow, for some reason, adds on an extra fastbirdy in front of fastbirdy.birdfarm, and it can't end up delivering the message.

I know my /etc/postfix/main.cf will be pertinent, but it's pretty big. I gotta post it anyway...

have you tried to access your mail server with telnet emerge telnet then try

telnet localhost 25
helo your hostname
mail from:root
rcpt to:localuser
data
add data
. (you must add the dot to send the mail)
quit

while you are doing this open up another console and type in
tail -fn 20 /var/log/messages |grep postfix
check for errors

It appears to be attempting to look up DNS information, do you have your node.dnsaddress configured as a localIP? Check your /etc/hosts file.
