Like many others, I have serious issues with Arts. On a fresh restart, it's fine. However, if a problem comes along, and I have to restart the sound system, I usually get this:
Quote:

Sound server informational message:

Error while initializing the sound driver:

device: default can't be opened for playback (Device or resource busy)

The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

I had a tool on my old Redhat setup that would tell me what was hogging the sound device. I can't for the life of me remember what it was though. Anything similar w/ Gentoo?

Maybe lsof would help? Something like:
